SAN ANTONIO -- A local high school cheerleading skit at a pep rally has been called inappropriate by school officials and racist by others.
The controversial skit performed by the Brennan High School cheerleading team depicted a student being bullied at rival Holmes High School.
“We will not condone bullying nor kids making fun of kids that are bullied,” said Northside Independent School District spokesperson Pascual Gonzalez. “That is absolutely wrong.”
Video of the skit was shared on Facebook by students of both high schools.
Amber Rose Reyes, a junior at Holmes High School, said, “I found it kind of like racist.”
“The video also shows a student who was acting like a teacher obviously mocking someone with a heavy Spanish accent," explained Gonzalez. ”That’s totally inappropriate again."
NISD said the principal at Brennan High School should have reviewed the skit, and the cheerleaders’ sponsor should have used better judgment.
”It never should have happened," says Gonzalez.
The local chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens agreed.
“These types of negative stereotypes are not funny, and even though we try and make them funny, that only perpetuate a cultural divide - a racial divide,” said Rodolfo Rosales of LULAC.
The school district said Brennan High School’s principal met with Holmes High School’s principal to apologize and has responded personally to every call the school has received concerning the skit.
