SAN ANTONIO -- A female pit bull was left tied to the door of a south side thrift store for four days. Soon after, she gave birth. Though a neighbor managed to get some food and water to the animal, it took days before anyone would came to the dog's rescue. In that time, three of her pups died.

Last Wednesday a female pit bull was left  abandoned in front of a thrift store in the 1800 block of Rigsby.

A nearby neighbor took it upon herself to slide food and water to the mother dog who was tied to the shop door by a three foot long chain. She said the dog was very protective so she was unable to remove the chain and free the dog.

People at the scene said they called ACS on Wednesday and Thursday, but there was no response.

The neighbor said the dog gave birth to seven puppies a couple of days after she was found at the store. However, three of the seven puppies have since died.

The owner of the building says he does not know who left the dog there.

ACS arrived at the building at 1 p.m. Sunday and rescued the remaining living puppies and the mother dog.

Local rescue groups say they will try to take in the abandoned animals.
