National spelling bee finalist returns home to San Antonio

Alex Iyer placed seventh in the Scripps National Spelling Bee! He stumped KENS 5 anchors Barry Davis and Sarah Forgany with his own spelling test.

SAN ANTONIO - Local Scripps National Spelling Bee finalist Alex Iyer visited KENS 5 Friday, and he stumped anchors Sarah Forgany and Barry Davis with a few of the tough words he has mastered.

Iyer placed an impressive seventh at the 2017 national bee.

He was known as "speller 259" during the competition, and he said countless hours of practice earned him a spot alongside other top spellers in the country.

He attends the Geneva School of Boerne and now hopes to help other local students in their quest to qualify for the national bee.
