It's hard to walk a few blocks downtown and not spot a mariachi group.
"San Antonio serves host to the largest and longest-running mariachi festivals in Texas and one of the most prominent throughout the world," Mariachi Extravaganza director Cynthia Munoz said.
For many students, it's a dream to make it to the Alamo City and compete in the Mariachi Extravaganza.
"We have more than 52 mariachi groups from all over the country and from Mexico participating in this year's Mariachi extravaganza," Munoz noted.
Students like McAllen High School senior Kamryn Ramirez look forward to coming back each year, participating in workshops, concerts, and sharing the culture with others.
"It's much more than just a mariachi group playing for you at dinner, it's much more than that. It's about uniting in culture and it's a beautiful thing. It's the most beautiful music out there, at least it is to me," Ramirez said.
The winning group and vocalist opens up for the world-renowned band Mariachi Vargas at the Lila Cockrell Theater on Saturday.
"It would bring a lot of pride, for us to win it would be a real blessing and an amazing opportunity." the Brackenridge High School Mariachi Band said.
