We are just 43 days away from Fiesta. And on Tuesday, we learned who will lead the Battle of Flowers Parade.
Father David Garcia enthusiastically accepted being this year's grand marshal of the Battle of Flowers Parade.
"I'm the first religious leader!” he exclaimed. “It’s a great honor."
Not only is it in an honor, it's history-making. The native San Antonian is the first priest to lead the parade.
"After 126 years, they got around to religion people,” he said jokingly.
The parade is the oldest and largest in the nation, organized and run exclusively by women volunteers. KENS 5 got a sneak peak at renditions of some of the upcoming floats that depict other World Heritage Sites around the world.
Area high school student will ride on the nine colorful creations.
"San Antonio is now up there with the pyramids of Egypt and the Taj Mahal,” Father David said. “It’s humbling and a great honor.”
Father David is the Rector of San Fernando Cathedral.
The Battle of Flowers Association began in 1891 to support education and honor the heroes of the Alamo.
