Cultural sounds will soon be belting out through the heart of the city.

Local high schoolers will be taking part in the first annual Mariachi Corazón de San Antonio Festival on October 20.

Several San Antonio area schools will compete for a cash prize of $1,500 and the title of Best High School-level Mariachi Band in the San Antonio area.

The Main Plaza Conservancy is putting on the event.

"Main Plaza - it's the historic center of San Antonio," said Jane Pauley-Flores, MPC executive director. "This is where it all began. Its the natural place for it."

The competition will be judged by professional musicians, giving grades for musicianship, technique and style.
