KENS Television announced Monday that Mat Garcia has signed on to join the news team on KENS 5 Eyewitness News This Morning.
Garcia will replace veteran anchor Fred Lozano, who will be retiring after more than 30 years on the air in San Antonio.
“We conducted a nation-wide search and we are pleased to bring a journalist of Mat’s caliber to join Sarah Forgany, Natalie Tejeda and Paul Mireles,” said Bob McGann, president and general manager of KENS Television.
Garcia has extensive experience as a broadcast journalist, and has anchored morning and evening newscasts at stations from Texas to New York City. A true Texan, he is a native of Austin and graduated from the University of Texas.
“I have always dreamed of coming back to Texas,” said Mat. “I couldn’t be more excited about coming to San Antonio and getting to work for the premier station in South Texas.”
“Mat brings tremendous experience to the anchor desk,” said Kurt Davis, KENS 5’s executive news director. “Mat’s Texas roots will help him connect with San Antonio viewers.”
Before joining KENS 5 Eyewitness News, Garcia served as primary morning anchor for more than three years at KOCO-TV in Oklahoma City.
Mat has been honored with numerous awards for excellence in broadcasting, including winning last year’s prestigious AP award for Oklahoma City’s Best Morning News.
