A chapter in The Silver Cradle says Don Juan Ximenes obtained the property in 1852 from Sam S. Smith, the first mayor of San Antonio. It is said that the family built a chapel next to their home on Ruiz Street some time between 1850 and 1870. A 1926 San Antonio Light article says descendants claimed a saint who called himself "El Senor de los Milagros" appeared to Juan Ximenes "on the outskirts of the village of Bexar." The legend says Ximenes promised to build the chapel on the very spot of his vision.
