In 2009, there were 12,107 children who were removed from their home as a result of abuse or neglect. The numbers of hurting children are overwhelming. What can you do? Every little bit helps, so here's your chance.

The New Beginnings Children's Home is calling all runners and walkers to participate in the Independence Day 5K Run/1Mile Walk. It will take place at Canaan Land Ranch at 9:00am. At 10:00am there will be a 100-meter and 200-meter dash for kids. It's $20.00 to run if you preregister and $25.00 on race day. All proceeds go to benefit the New Beginnings Children's Home. The home is a child placing agency and residential childcare facility. It also serves as a place of spiritual healing for abused children and their families.

The number of abused children in San Antonio is reaching record numbers. According to the Department of Children and Family Services, there were 7,961 confirmed victims of child abuse or neglect in Texas in 2009. In San Antonio alone, 4,177 children were in placed DFPS substitute care or in foster care last year.

Maybe you'll consider heading out to the 5K. If you need more information, contact John Smith or Elisha Zuniga by calling 210-892-2902 or by email at 5Krun@canaanlandranch.net . They are located out near Rio Medina, at 400 County Road 3821.
