It's hard to say no when someone invites you to participate in community events you really believe in, especially if they sound like a lot of fun.
One of the most recent events I committed to is a little crazy even for me. HeartGift tapped me to run a boot camp with a local celebrity athlete. Well, what we came up with sounds like it's going to be a quite challenging morning.
First of all, I've never run any sort of exercise class, much less a boxing boot camp. We contacted former world champion boxer Jesse James Leija and asked him if he would partner up with us to do this fundraiser for Heart Gift. He was excited about it!
So HeartGift is inviting anyone interested to sign up for a Celebrity Boxing Boot Camp, run by Jesse James...and me. It's happening at Jesse James Leija's ChampionFit Gym, located on San Pedro at Oblate, on Saturday, May 14. Check-in time is 8 a.m.
They're advertising a power breakfast at this time, but realistically, you'll want to show up and strap on some gloves and drink some water with a bite or two of a power bar.
I've done this class, and having much more than a couple of bites of any food is all your body can take unless you want an excuse to have to leave the class.
"James" makes sure there are no slackers and on this morning, I'll be there motivating (screaming at) all attendees to dig deep for 100 percent effort during the entire hour.
It's a lot of fun, and if you have anything left in you, we can all go for a three-mile run around the neighborhood.
The class will run from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. It's limited to 40 people, so sign up fast!
If you don't get to sign up for the class, it's definitely worth your time to try out one of James' boxing workouts. He's got a bunch of the large punching bags, speed bags and obstacle courses, and we'll do abs inside the ring.
Later, if you stick with it, you can spar with James or another one of the coaches. I've watched the sparring -- the coaches won't pummel you, but they will keep you running, bouncing and swinging all over the ring.
The workouts are challenging and a lot of fun for both men and women! I have added a link to his website.
