University students have a lot to learn about. Besides their core subjects and specialties within their major, students at the University of Texas at San Antonio are learning about cancer this month. It's a subject no one really wants to talk about; it's a subject everyone needs to know about.
The "Be the Match" Marrow Registry of the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center has teamed up with UTSA on a project called Cancer Awareness Month and Community Outreach (CAMCO). UTSA biology student and CAMCO committee member Juan Ramos said, "CAMCO is a way to create awareness of cancers that we don't necessarily think about." That means diseases like leukemia and lymphoma, not just the better-publicized (and more widely talked about) problems like breast and prostate cancer.
Among the activites, a program called Cancer Chats, where students will be able to hear from peers who have coped or are coping with cancer.
