When times are tough, we all have to cut back. Some people are putting off starting a family. Some people are staying in their current house instead of buying a new one. People are taking closer and cheaper vacations.
Now comes word that Americans are skimping on medicines they need. That's a belt-tightening measure that could be harmful to your health.
The Consumer Reports National Research Center released results of a recent telephone survey. It showed many consumers are changing the way they use the health care system because of concerns about money.
Here's how the numbers break down:
39% economized on some medical care within the past year
23% postponed a doctor's visit
16% declined a medical test because of cost
When it comes to prescription drugs, the survey showed:
27% had not complied with prescription drug regimens to save money
16% skipped refilling a prescription because of expense
12% had taken an expired drug
8% had cut prescribed pills in half to save money
You may think you are saving money by skipping doses or opting not to take the flu shot. But those penny-pinching choices could cost you a lot more in the long run, according to health professionals. After all, cutting corners when it comes to your health could lead to you becoming sicker, and that means more doctor's visits or even hospital bills.
If you have to cut something in your budget, make it dinners out or that extra outfit you don't need. Keep in mind your health is what makes the rest of your life possible!
