I have never won an office pool. I have never found money. I have never won the lottery.
I'm not lucky that way, so please don't be offended by my bracket picks. I really don't know what I am doing.
Every year I take a stab at March Madness and pick teams with very little preparation. I just wing it.
I do follow college basketball and I have my favorite teams. I love the Big 12, although I really didn't take that into account in this year. Go figure, even I don't know why I picked these teams. But here's my logic for the 2010 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament:
I like Cinderella stories and I like upsets. My Cinderella teams are Cornell making it to the Elite Eight and Siena making a Sweet 16 appearance. My Final Four predictions are Kansas, with Kansas State, West Virginia and Villanova upsetting the rest of the field.
I picked Kansas State and West Virginia in the NCAA championship game because it would make for a very good story. As a journalist, I like good stories. KSU has a third year head coach by the name of Frank Martin. Martin was an assistant coach under Bob Huggins. Huggins is the head coach of WVU. Wouldn't teacher and pupil meeting in the championship game make for a great story? I think so.
Why do I have Huggins and WVU winning over Martin and K-State? Because the teacher always leaves something behind. I think Huggins taught Martin well, but he didn't teach him everything. Huggins will have a few tricks up his sleeve that would make the difference, if this even happens. And it's highly unlikely based on my past picks.
But, you never know. Maybe I'm due!
