Sometimes, little things mean a lot.
Take the gifts to local cancer patients from St. Mary's University School of Law students. On Friday, November 6th, students visited the Cancer Therapy & Research Center at the U.T. Health Science Center to deliver hats. Why hats? Many of the hundreds of patients who file through the CTRC each week are getting strong therapies that make them lose their hair. Covering their unwanted baldness in a stylish way boosts their self-esteem and brings just a little bit of sunlight into their lives.
The hats were collected in October by law students who write and publish "The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Minority Issues." Student Eric Bernal says it's their way to "give back to the people we write on behalf of. Our mission is to give a voice to the voiceless."
Cancer patient Edna A. Cockrell (pictured above) told St. Mary’s law review editor-in-chief Hayley Ellison that she never expected to leave her treatment with a new hat.
Small gestures go a long way!
