Since this past summer, kids in our area have played the role of young diplomats of peace.
It all started from a group of local artists who wanted to add something different to their artisitic talents. They came up with an idea to form a a group of elementary school students and spread the message of peace throughout the world, while still learning to be future artists. They call their group, ArtPeace.
Over the summer, these San Antonio kids created their own artwork and sent them overseas to other children their age. In this short time, their work has already been shared by their new friends -- Iraqi refugee children in Jordan and children in Rwanda. They learned about pollution, plus conserving water and other resources. Basically, they learned about the world around them, and that there are children just like them with the same dreams.
But it's not enough to just read about their accomplishments. You'll have to see it to believe it, which is why organizers invite the public to view these students' artwork in ArtPeace's Community Arts Festival.
Starting Friday evening at 5:30pm, on November 13th, ArtPeace will start off the festival with an uplifting movie called, Joyeux Noel. It's free and for all ages, plus it'll be facilitated by Rosalyn Collier of the Peace Center. Donations are accepted.
Then, Saturday is a Presentation of the Banners. A ceremony will be held then a performance of songs of peace. The banners made by the local children will be taken to the Iraqi refugee children living in Jordan. Artwork exchanged with children in Rwanda will be also be displayed for families to see.
Organizers will wrap up the weekend with services in the morning, and an Arts show and sale. Here, some of the adult artists will show off their work for others to see and perhaps buy.
If you'd like to learn more about this young group or if you'd like to make donations or reserve your spot during Friday's event, call (210) 655-2731.
