Gung Hay Fat Choy!
In China, that means "Best Wishes and Congratulations. Have a propsperous and good year." Or simply put, "Happy New Year."
Monday, January 26th is the start of the new year, the Year of the Ox. The new year is one of the most important days on the calendar in many parts of Asia. It's a 15-day celebration of family gatherings and reunion dinners. Lion dancers and firecrackers kick off New Year's day to help ward off evil spirits. From envelopes to lanterns, the color red has a strong presence throughout this holiday. It's a symbol of good luck.
By the way, we featured this segment on both Great Day SA (January 21st) and Great Day Sunday (January 25th). Wondering how San Antonians celebrate the New Year? Be sure to tune in this Thursday, January 29th at 9am.
If you were born in 1913, 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997 and now 2009, it's your year.
The Chinese zodiac consists of 12 animals. Those born the year of the ox are believed to be patient, dependable, and hard working. I've read the Ox will avoid risks in business and personal relationships plus it's known to save and avoid high debt. With last year's economic downturn, there's hope we'll see that hard work in 2009.
Famous celebrities born the year of the ox are Oscar De La Hoya, Meryl Streep, Bruce Springsteen, George Clooney, and coincidentally... President Barack Obama. This is certainly the President's year!
You and your family can enjoy the cultures of Asia when the city celebrates at UTSA's Institute of Texan Cultures. From traditional food to amazing dancers, you can enjoy another New Year's party. Don't forget to check out the Asian Festival on Saturday, January 31st.
