It happened again on my way to work.
It happens every morning. There's something about morning commutes that make people believe they own the lane they're driving in.
I'm on the freeway entrance. I turn on my blinker. I inch my way forward in front of one driver. I make sure there's enough space for my car to get into his lane. I make eye contact with this driver and I proceed for that lane. And then!...
The driver speeds up!
HEY!
What happened? That was my window of opportunity! You were supposed to let me in!
Don't freeway entrances work like a zipper? One after another... a car makes its way into a lane???!
You let me in... then I let the next car in... and so on and so forth.
I know turning on your blinkers doesn't guarantee a free pass onto the freeway, but isn't it a courtesy to let the driver in?
Moving in front of a driver shouldn't be taken personally. I just need to make sure my lane doesn't turn into an exit!
While some motorists pay more attention to what's in front of them, than you, I've noticed others pretend they don't see you.
Being from California, I'd hear people tell me my home state has the worst drivers. I've had some experiences.
One of my scariest moments was in New York City. Cars were going so fast in every lane that by the time I wanted to move from right to left, I chickened out and pulled over.
My heart was racing. My palms were sweaty. People were honking at me... yelling words I can't repeat. It didn't help I had out-of-state plates.
I was a moving target for bad jokes.
I'd still go back to the Big Apple. It's one of my favorite cities! But I'm leaving my car at home.
In San Antonio, we're still very friendly. That's what I love about this city. For the most part, drivers will let you in. But I think there's something about that morning commute no matter what road you take.
I do know I'm an advocate of the "thank you" or "you can go" hand signal.
"Yes driver on my right at a four-way stop, it's your turn to go." (hand signal)
"Yes, pedestrian, you can cross." (hand signal)
"Thanks driver to my left, for letting me get into your lane." (hand signal)
I mean, I try to be courteous and communicate.
No one person owns the roadways. We all pay taxes to help build and maintain them. We all have to share them, which makes us a freeway family!
So the next time you're on your morning commute and someone looks like they desparately need to get in front of you, just let them in!
Don't worry, we'll all get to our destination somehow.
