San Antonio has some great museums. The McNay on north New Braunfels Avenue is well known for its great art collection ranging from the medieval period to present day.
There are more than 350 paintings by such masters as Renoir, Van Goth, Cèzanne and Picasso. But I've gotta tell you I wish I knew more about the meaning behind many of those paintings and the artists who created them. An art connoisseur I am not.
And that's where a decent docent would come in handy.
This year, the McNay begins training new tour guides to give its visitors a more meaningful and satisfying experience.
The classes don't start until the fall of 20-10 but, already, applications are being accepted.
About 90 percent of a docent's work at the McNay involves giving tours for students in elementary school through high school, as well as in college.
But they'll also provide tours for regular folks who just want to know more about art, including those esoteric pieces that often seem to make to sense whether looking at them right-side up or upside-down or side-ways.
If you're interested, you can contact the McNay by phone at 210.805.1768 or by email at education@mcnayart.org.
Your application form will be sent to you by regular mail.
