After Sunday's disappointment, it's turned out to be a good week for Roadrunners senior defensive end Marcus Davenport.
Davenport was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year on Wednesday, a day after making the all-conference first team. The winner of the award was determined by a vote of the C-USA's 14 head coaches.
The individual awards come after the disappointment of Sunday, when the Roadrunners were shut out of the bowl season even though they met the threshold of six victories.
A Stevens High School graduate, Davenport has accepted an invitation to play in the Reese’s Senior Bowl on Jan. 27 in Mobile, Ala.
Davenport finished his senior season with 55 tackles and set school records with 17.5 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks and eight quarterback hurries. He also had four pass breakups, three forced fumbles and a fumble return for a touchdown.
Davenport played a key role for a UTSA defense that led C-USA in five different statistical categories this season. The Roadrunners averages per game for total yards allowed (287.8), passing yards allowed (160.1) and points allowed (17), ranked seventh, third and eighth, respectively, in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
Davenport ranked 10th in the FBC in tackles for loss per game (1.5).
A second-team All-Conference USA selection last year, Davenport is the second UTSA player to receive a conference player of the year award. Linebacker Josiah Tauaefa was named C-USA Freshman of the Year last season.
UTSA finished 6-5 overall and 3-5 in conference play this season. The Roadrunners had five victories after their seventh game, but they won only one of their last four games.
