Al Borges, a two-time finalist for the Broyles Award given annually to the best assistant coach in college football, is UTSA's new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
Borges' hiring was announced by Roadrunners head coach Frank Wilson on Friday. Borges replaces Frank Scelfo, who was fired a day after UTSA finished the 2017 season 6-5.
Borges' 36-year career includes stints as offensive coordinator at Michigan (2011-13), Auburn (2004-07), UCLA (1996-2000), Oregon (1995) and Boise State (1993-94).
"I am thrilled to be able to announce the hiring of Al Borges as our new offensive coordinator," Wilson said in a news release. "Al Borges has a masterful offensive mind and a coaching style that takes advantage of the talent and skill set of the players on the roster. His unique ability to develop quarterbacks is second to none. Our coaching staff got better today."
Borges, 62, was an offensive analyst at Auburn during the 2017 season. The Tigers won the Southeastern Conference West Division title and finished 10-4 overall. Their offense averaged 451.6 yards and 33.9 points per game.
Auburn went 41-9 during Borges' tenure as offensive coordinator. The Tigers went undefeated and were ranked No. 2 in 2004, and were the only SEC team to finish in the Top 15 in every season of Borges' four-season tenure. Quarterback Jason Campbell and running backs Carnell Williams and Ronnie Brown, all first-round draft picks in 2005, were among the players Borges coached at Auburn.
Borges also has been an offensive coordinator at San Diego State, San Jose State, Indiana, California and Portland State.
Wilson hired Scelfo as UTSA's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach after succeeding Larry Coker in January 2016.
The Roadrunners' offense failed to score a touchdown in its last two games last season. UTSA fell to Louisiana Tech 20-6 on the road in its finale, finishing with a season-low 201 yards of total offense. The Bulldogs held the Roadrunners to 110 yards rushing and 91 passing.
UTSA finished the season 98th among 130 FBS teams in total offense with an average of 387 yards per game -- 184.5 rushing and 202.8 passing. The Roadrunners were 103rd in scoring (23.5), No. 56 in rushing and No. 94 in passing.
The Roadrunners are expected to return six offensive starters when they open spring training in March. They return leading rusher Jalen Rhodes, but must replace quarterback Dalton Sturm and leading receivers Kerry Thomas Jr. and Josh Stewart.
UTSA won the minimum six games required for bowl eligibility last season, but the Roadrunners did not receive an invitation. Wilson led the Roadrunners to their first bowl after the 2016 season, but they lost to New Mexico in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl and finished 6-7.
UTSA will start spring training with two new coordinator. Wilson promoted associated head coach/linebackers coach Jason Rollins to defensive coordinator last month after Pete Golding resigned to join Nick Saban's staff at Alabama.
Wilson has hired three other new assistant coaches since the end of the season, Charlie Camp (linebackers), Darrel Funk (offensive line) Deron Wilson (cornerbacks).
Alamo Heights graduate Giovanni Vizza, a quality control coach for the UTSA offense the past two seasons, also has been hired as an assistant coach. Vizza was a graduate assistant under former head coach Larry Coker in 2014 and 2015, working with the quarterbacks.
UTSA is 38-44 since kicking off its first season in 2011.
