In an article published Sunday, Yahoo Sports reports that Kawhi Leonard will not suit up for the Spurs this postseason, according to league sources.
Leonard has been rehabbing his quad injury in New York, sometimes missing the Spurs’ games in San Antonio or elsewhere. Gregg Popovich confirmed that Leonard is in New York during an interview. Popovich said that Leonard's absence comes from his own medical team not providing clearance to return.
Leonard, the two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, played in just nine games for the Spurs this year, averaging a strong 16.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.0 blocks this season. Those numbers are among the best for any player who has played in 10 games or fewer in a season.
The news comes after the Spurs lost the opening game of their first-round series to the Warriors on Saturday afternoon. Game two is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. Central on Monday in California.
