Report: Spurs held players-only meeting to discuss Kawhi Leonard

League sources told ESPN that the players tried to convince Leonard to return in a meeting Saturday night.

The drama around Kawhi Leonard and the Spurs continues.

A day after Manu Ginobili told the media that he doesn’t think Leonard will return this season, a report details a players-only meeting the Spurs held Saturday after the team’s win over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Tony Parker led the emotional meeting in which teammates implored Leonard to return to the lineup and help the Spurs make a push for a playoff spot.

Sources say Leonard stood his ground in the face of frustrated teammates. Leonard allegedly insisted that he had good reason for missing 63 games and counting during the 2017-18 season.

Danny Green was quick to respond on Twitter, saying that ESPN's report "couldn't be anymore incorrect."

Fans have been growing frustrated with Leonard’s apparent struggle with tendinopathy in his right quadriceps. Leonard’s teammates are now also apparently divided. Last week, Pau Gasol stood up for Leonard, but comments like Ginobili’s yesterday make it seem like the locker room may be just as confused as Spurs fans on Leonard’s status.

Several times in the past week or two, there have been reports that Leonard would be returning soon. But those stories have cooled, and as of Thursday morning, there is no word on Leonard’s status for the next game, let alone the rest of the season.

The Spurs are now 42-30, having won five straight games to take control of the sixth spot in the Western Conference playoff race. There are 10 games left in the season. Next up for the Silver & Black is a home game against the Utah Jazz on Friday night.
