GAME BLOG: Spurs defeat Jazz, 110-97

The Spurs are 2-0 to start their six-game home stand.

FOURTH QUARTER:

Spurs win, 110-97

Four of the Spurs' five starters scored in double figures, including DeMar DeRozan (26 points, 8 assists), LaMarcus Aldridge (20 points), Rudy Gay (23 points, 15 rebounds) and Bryn Forbes (15 points).

The Spurs also gobbled up 8 more rebounds and committed 11 turnovers to Utah's 16.

The Jazz were led by guards Ricky Rubio (27 points) and Donovan Mitchell, who scored all 27 of his points in the second half.

The Spurs showed no fear in attacking the rim, despite Utah's massive front line of Rudy Gobert and Derrick Favors. The Spurs had a +14 margin in points in the paint. Nifty passing helped, too.

The Jazz got within 5 points early in the 4th quarter, making it 88-83, but the Spurs scored the next 9 points to re-take control. Derrick White added some emphasis to the run. He's only scored two field goals, but both have been big dunks.

THIRD QUARTER:

After three, the Spurs lead 82-72.

The third quarter was not as good for the Spurs, as the Jazz outscored the Silver & Black 36-28 in the period. Rudy Gay did some nice things for the Spurs.

The Jazz's Donovan Mitchell, who was held scoreless in the first half, erupted for 14 points in the third.

SECOND QUARTER:

At halftime, the Spurs lead 54-36.

DeMar DeRozan leads all scorers with 16 points. His buzzer-beater gave the Spurs their largest lead of the night as the teams went back to their locker rooms. The Spurs closed on a 12-0 run.

LaMarcus Aldridge has done well against one of the league's top defensive big men. LMA is second among all scorers with 14 points late in the second quarter. He's made 7 of his 9 shots, including this one over Rudy Gobert. Derrick White is also not afraid of the "Stifle Tower."

The Spurs scored the first 7 points of the second quarter, obtaining a double-digit lead and forcing Utah to call a timeout to turn the tide.

FIRST QUARTER:

After one, the Spurs lead 23-18.

Patty Mills and Marco Belinelli provided a boost off the bench, scoring all 11 points for the Silver & Black reserves. The Utah bench accounted for just 5 points. DeMar DeRozan was the top scorer after 12 minutes. He scored 8 points on 3-of-7 shooting.

It was a game of runs early. The Spurs scored first, but then the Jazz took a 9-4 lead. The Spurs responded by scoring the next 6 points after a timeout.

The start of the season hasn't gone according to plan for either team. Both the Utah Jazz and San Antonio Spurs were playoff teams just a few months ago, but a lot has changed since April, and neither team has won more than half of their games in the new season.

Sunday night, the Jazz (13-13) and Spurs (12-14) face off for the second time in a week. The Jazz defeated the Spurs 139-105 Tuesday night in Utah. The teams won't meet again until February.

The Spurs are in a siz-game home stand and will be playing at the AT&T Center every other night through Monday, December 17.
