SAN ANTONIO -- The City of San Antonio said the River Walk is scheduled to be drained for cleaning and maintenance Jan. 4-9.

The city said shops, hotels and restaurants will be conducting business as usual, with the exception of Rio San Antonio Cruises.

About five years ago, the city removed more than eight tons of sediment from the river loop and parts where the Riverwalk is extended.

Since then, the River Walk has been drained only when the city assesses that it is needed. The last draining was in 2014.

Routine maintenance and inspection of the walls normally submerged in the water can take several days, according to the city's website.
