SA chapter of Moms Demand Action calls for common-sense gun reform

The group says that thoughts and prayers don't mean anything if there's no action.

Enough is enough--that's the message from the local chapter of 'Moms Demand Action', which is a non-partisan group demanding change from lawmakers when it comes to gun laws.

On Sunday, several parents and students packed La Trinidad United Methodist Church to hear from Sandy and Lonnie Phillips. They lost their daughter Jessica Ghawi who was inside the movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. She was on the twelve killed on July 20, 2012. They now travel across the country sharing their painful story, but also continue fighting for gun law reform.

"We have seen one mass shooting after another, after another, after another," Sandy said. "We have been to seven mass shootings since Aurora," Lonnie said. "In each one they used an assault weapons an AR-15."

Since their daughter was killed, the Phillips' have pushed for a ban on assault-style weapons. Their message was well received at Sunday's Moms Demand Action San Antonio Chapter meeting.

The local chapter is part of a nationwide group that calls for common-sense gun reform. Shandelle Grifley has been a volunteer with the organization for five years. She said they would also like to see changes in the background checks.

"Right now, it is estimated that 40 percent of gun sales do not have a background check," she said. "So, we think that laws in the process can be improved."

The moms, who wear red, said thoughts and prayers don't mean anything, if there's no action. The local group meets monthly to discuss the contentious subject of gun reform.

"We talk about that in Texas it is a little bit of a bigger and a tougher fight, that we play a lot of defense here in Texas," she said.

But the group along with the Phillips' believe people across the country are ready for a change. They're especially optimistic because of the young kids -- from Stoneman Douglas -- for example who are leading the fight for change .

"These kids are challenging every adult in the nation to do what they're doing, to stand up for the morality of life," Sandy said.
