A woman and child were killed in a house fire on the south side of Bexar County Wednesday night.

A two-story home in the 20500 block of Morin Road near Von Ormy became engulfed in flames around 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Police said three people were able to make it out alive, but two weren't as lucky. The victims have been identified as 80-year-old Mary Hernandez and 6-year-old Eloy Mitchell. a grandmother and her grandson.

Mary Herrera, Hernandez's niece, said that the two were inseparable.

“She's at peace, and with her main little man, she said. “She took care of him very well.”

The family says that the two were on the second floor when the fire started. Right now, they say it appears that the fire may have been electrical.

Four other people were in the house. Three including a one-year-old were taken to the hospital with minor injuries and are expected to be okay.

The smoke was so dark, she couldn't see, and they just started climbing out the windows,” Herrera said. “My aunt was on the opposite bedroom, and we don't even know what happened there. We don't know if she said anything, or if the smoke got them."

Herrera also said that her aunt had a big heart and was always giving. She just can't believe she's gone.

“It's hard to see someone like that taken like that, that gave a lot,” she said. “It is very hard on the family. But we know she's okay.”

The Bexar County Fire Marshal’s Office is still trying to determine the cause. The family said a big challenge in putting out the fire was there was not much water in a hydrant near the home. They say crews had to get water from a hydrant a couple of blocks away. But according to the fire marshals, there was no issue in getting water.

The structure was deemed a total loss at an estimated $85,000.
