Students test their knowledge of meats for a scholarship

Contestants ages 8-18 competed in the Meat Science Skillathon at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo to try to earn the top prize: a $10,000 scholarship.

Thanks to a partnership with H-E-B, the third annual Meat Science Skillathon was bigger than ever.

Students in the Junior (8-13 years old) and Senior (14-18 years old) demonstrated their knowledge in a variety of ways.

It started with a written test, followed by the identification portion, in which contestants had to identify 40 retail cuts of meat. Other elements included yield grades, quality grades and BBQ cookery skills. Top contestants in the Senior age division also competed in a final round featuring an extemporaneous speech about the meat industry topic.

The top prize in the competition was a $10,000 scholarship. Organizers says they hope the event raises awareness and interest in a career in the meat industry for young people.
