One of the biggest headlines across the country has been NFL players responding to President Donald Trump, after he criticized some NFL players for peacefully protesting during the national anthem.

Now, it’s not just players and coaches from the NFL talking about the issue. NBA players and coaches are also chiming in, including the Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, who has been critical of Trump in the past.

“I wonder what the people think about, who voted for him (Trump), where the line is? How much they can take? Where does the morality and decency kick in?” Popovich said.

It was vintage coach Pop Monday on the first day of Spurs training camp when taking questions from reporters.

It’s not the first time Popovich has dipped into politics or criticized President Donald Trump. And as Pop continues to show, he’s not afraid to speak his mind on issues like politics, or culture. He’s also made it clear, his players have his full support to do the same.

“I think it’s been great what’s going on in the NFL. What I always heard about this country is that it’s a free country and you have the freedom of speech to say whatever you want, the way you want, peacefully,” Manu Ginobili said.

However, for some Spurs fans, they would prefer the team stick to the game.

“Before it was all about football, it was all about baseball and basketball and everybody was having fun. And now politics is getting involved and it feels like it’s affecting everybody in a certain way,” Della Castillo said.

Others support coach Pop and don’t have a problem with what he says on, or off the court.

“I don’t think it should be ‘politics should just stay politics.’ I mean it affects everybody and athletes are obviously people that people listen to and I think they should speak their minds,” Rico Rivera said.

“For him to speak his mind (Popovich) on what’s going on in politics, I think he has every right to and every player does also,” Leslie Gonzales said.

What remains to be seen is how the blending of sports and politics will impact the loyalty Spurs fans have given their beloved team. On Twitter Mary Carnes wrote:

“He (Popovich) is WRONG!!! And I will not watch the Spurs”

“We all love the Spurs. We're all Spurs family. So why let somebodies opinion dictate whether you go to a Spurs game or not? I think it’s a bit ridiculous,” Joe Ivey said.
