San Antonians on high alert following package explosions in Texas

Local law enforcement agencies are responding to a number of calls about suspicious packages in the city and Bexar County, following an explosion at a FedEx facility in Schertz.

The San Antonio Fire Department tells KENS 5 that crews responded to three false alarm calls regarding suspicious packages Tuesday afternoon.

Jim Chesnut, who lives on the northwest side, said he immediately called 911 after he found a suspicious package sitting on his front porch. "It wasn't delivered as a package," Chesnut said. "It didn't have a label on it. It looked like it was a Coca Cola 12-pack and it had one hole in one corner. It just didn't look normal, so I called it in."

Bexar County Sheriff's Office and San Antonio Police Department also responded to calls that turned out to be false alarms, but did not immediately provide the official number of calls.

As law enforcement agencies continue to ask residents to be vigilant and check their packages, Chesnut said he's rather be safe than sorry and give police a call when something just doesn't feel right.

"When I saw that, it sent up a red flag," Chesnut said. "There's a huge amount of anxiety in the population now due to the nature of the political climate in which we live and I think terrorism is constantly talked about and I think it's just wise for people to be on the safe side."

The U.S. Postal Service, among a number of agencies, posted an example of what to look out for if you receive a suspicious package or piece of mail.

Chesnut said it was a similar checklist that helped him make the call today.

"Don't touch it. Don't pick it up. Don't smell it," Chesnut said, "because you never know what that trigger device is going to be."
