SAN ANTONIO - A San Antonio Fire Department lieutenant is getting help from his community in his own fight against cancer.
Dozens came out to St. Anthony Catholic School Saturday for a bar-b-q plate sale.
The funds raised go to benefit Max Weltens, who has been with the department for over 20 years. The money will go to help his family, treatment and travel.
Just in December, doctors told Weltens he had stage four esophageal cancer, something he said was completely unexpected.
“All of the sudden, boom I have stage four cancer so it's changed my life for sure,” Weltens said. “But to see the goodness of everybody and to go through this has been has changed my life for the better.”
People have also donated money through the lieutenant’s GoFundMe page which has already raised over $30,000.
