SAFD, bomb squad responds to 'suspicious package' on the southwest side

Ten fire units responded at the scene at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in the 3300 block of Weir Avenue.

The San Antonio Fire Department and bomb squad responded to a suspicious package in the 3300 block of Weir Avenue on the city's southwest side. Ten fire units responded to the scene at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Sergeant Steven Huron of SAPD said the package was made safe and operations were wrapping up at about 9 p.m. No one was injured, Huron said.

"They did the right thing and called the authorities and we conducted our investigation to make sure everyone was safe," Huron said. "We would rather be overly cautious and make sure that there is nobody injured. We are just glad that there was basically nothing to it and everybody is safe. But they did the right thing to call us."

The package contained non-dangerous materials, officials said, but the appearance of the package was a concern. The package was also delivered by an unmarked vehicle, which raised some red flags.

"Most of the time packages should be received in good condition. They should be taped," Huron said. "I know the post office doesn't accept packages that are not taped correctly so if anybody ever gets a package that looks ragged or sees an unmarked vehicle or a person just come deliver it, call SAPD and we'll come take a look."

The religious facility reported a suspicious package around 4 pm.

Our crew on the scene reported that first responders were in hazmat suits.
