SAN ANTONIO - A driver hit a police officer doing traffic control on the highway sending him to the hospital.

The accident happened at 4 a.m. Sunday off Interstate 35 near Walzem Road when the officer was in his patrol vehicle diverting traffic from a previous crash.

Police said an SUV crashed into the rear of the officer's vehicle. The SUV then rotated crashing into a guardrail.

The officer was taken to downtown Baptist with only minor injuries after being hit from behind.

The driver of the SUV was transported to San Antonio Military Medical Center in serious condition. The passenger of the SUV refused EMS transport.

Police said the vehicle smelled strongly of alcohol.

It is still an active investigation and charges are pending against the driver of the SUV.
