North and South Padre Island beaches are officially closed to driving due to extremely high tides.
Even though Tropical Storm Cindy is far to the East, The National Park Service has closed North and South Beach to vehicle traffic due to high waters on the beaches. A press release notes the gulf waters are up to the dune line.
Park rangers will monitor conditions and the public will be notified when the beaches are reopened to driving. The press release noted the closure is expected to last for the next 24 hours.
They also warn against rip currents and that swimming is not advised due to the high possibility of being pulled away from shore by a rip current. To learn more about the dangers of rip currents and how to survive if you are caught in one, you can visit http://www.ripcurrents.noaa.gov/.
