The bond between two brothers is a unique one. That's definitely the case for 11-year-old Nakoma and his brother, 9-year-old Bill.
The boys' personalities are so different but complementary. They finish each others' sentences, and when one is shy, the other is bold. They never stop looking out for each other.
One recent afternoon, they spent some time at Denman Estate Park on the northwest side, where they quickly found adventures to keep them busy.
[It's] hiding in the trees or something, Nakoma says. He's the curious, talkative, take-action kind of brother.
You don't see it, Bill? he asks his brother about the frog they spotted in the bushes.
I don't know. He went over there, responds Bill in an obviously bossy tone. Bill likes to stand back and observe the action, but he likes to give his brother orders.
[It was] big! It was kicking the ground, says Bill about the frog. It went back on the pond or something.
The brothers stay with the same foster family, and their Child Protective Services case worker, Monique Hernandez, says the best forever family scenario would be to keep them together.
Nakoma is definitely the big brother. They try to get the other one to do what the other one does. They need to be together, Hernandez says.
The brothers love the outdoors, the San Antonio Spurs, and SpongeBob, which they proudly display on their t-shirts.
It's my favorite show. He make jokes and he laughs, says Nakoma about the SpongeBob cartoons.
Hernandez says if you spend time around Nakoma and Bill, you can see how sweet they are, and that's something she says they are ready to share with a forever family.
They have a wonderful personality. They have so much love to give. They're always giving hugs, and they always want to do so well and please you, Hernandez says.
