Police have released an image of the man they say shot and killed a San Marcos Police Officer Kenneth Copeland Monday afternoon while he was serving a warrant.

Stewart Thomas Mettz, 51, has been charged with capital murder of a peace officer, as well as injury to an elderly person and assault causing bodily injury/family violence.

He awaits transport to the Hays County Law Enforcement Center pending his release from an Austin hospital, where he is under 24-hour guard by Hays County Sheriff’s officers, according to a press release from The City of San Marcos.

Mettz bond has been set at $500,000 for the family violence and injury charges; Justice of the Peace Maggie H. Moreno has ordered no bond for the capital murder charge.
