Scared and concerned. That's how many people living in Kirby feel after a DPS trooper was shot at his home.
It happened just before midnight Thursday on a street called Tom Stafford.
The off-duty trooper, whose name is not being released, claimed he was attacked by a man in his backyard.
He says the man was trying to force his way inside. During a struggle, the trooper's gun went off. A bullet hit the trooper in a protective vest he was wearing.
The suspect, according to the trooper, then ran away.
At last check, the 42-year-old trooper was being evaluated at San Antonio Military Medical Center. He's expected to fully recover.
As for the suspect, DPS isn't saying much. Investigators are working to come up with details about the man and are asking the public to give them a call if they can assist.
Neighbors living on Tom Stafford told KENS 5 the trooper is a military veteran. He's been a trooper for about nine years and always keeps an eye out for others.
"He's a very nice person, very friendly," said Elia Barreto, the trooper's neighbor.
