NCAA Final Four shares secure safety measures

In the wake of a series of bombings in Austin and Schertz, officials with the NCAA Final Four say the safety and security measures that have been in place for months will keep visitors safe.

The NCAA Final Four will bring thousands of people to San Antonio next week. But the NCAA Final Four committee has no plans to update security measures, because there is no need to.

"Security and safety procedures have been in place for many many months now," said tournament organizer Mary Ullman-Japhet of San Antonio's organizing committee. "It's unfortunate what's happening today, but that doesn't change anything."

She says that, following explosions in Austin and Schertz, danger in a delivery to the Alamodome is no concern.

"There is a very strong security policy that is checking all packages scheduled to be delivered, every package that is scheduled to be delivered to the Alamodome is on its manifest. It is accounted for."

Ullman-Japhet would not disclose that procedure for screening the hundreds of deliveries the Alamodome receives leading up to the events. But she did share one new safety measure in place: an extended parameter.

"It extends beyond the plaza levels, it will extend down to Cesar Chavez, it will include the parkway walkway, and all the way down to Sunset Station," she explained.

That, in addition to security measures we have seen before: the clear bag policy and scanners at all entrances. Ullman-Japhet said she wants this to be the safest Final Four ever.

A statement from NCAA said they will work closely with city, state, and federal agencies during the tournament. SAPD confirmed that partnership.

Chief McManus said that there will be "more than adequate resources" to ensure there is no incident. "That event is going to go on here," he said. "We're going to make sure that it stays safe. Period!"

Both NCAA and law enforcement say the public should play a role in creating a safe environment by reminding everyone that if you see something, say something.
