SAN ANTONIO -- A man is accused of being too heavy-handed while disciplining a young boy for misbehaving at school.

In fact, police believe the whipping is criminal.

The suspect's intentions may have been in the right place, but an arrest warrant said he crossed the line with a 9-year-old boy.

Johnny Gonzales was charged with injury to a child after an arrest warrant said he spanked the boy for kicking a teacher at school.

The boy got suspended.

Police said the 46-year-old man used a belt to hit the boy on the arm and leg, causing bruising, redness and a minor laceration.

Gonzales ran away from the scene after police were called by the child's relatives.

The incident happened three months ago.

Gonzales is being held without bond because he was already on parole.
