SAN ANTONIO – The city of El Cenizo, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) have filed a preliminary injunction to stop Senate Bill 4, commonly known as the sanctuary cities ban, from taking effect.
The plaintiffs said in a press release they seek a preliminary injunction because “the law is patently unconstitutional on numerous grounds and the balance of harms strongly militates in favor of preserving the status quo.”
SB 4 bans “sanctuary cities” that serve as safe-havens for those without American citizenship. The bill also permits law enforcement agencies to ask anyone who is detained, including during a traffic stop, about their immigration status. Many fear this will lead to racial profiling.
The law is expected to go into effect on September 1, 2017.
