The community of Karnes County is welcoming its newest member to the local sheriff’s department.

A 16-month-old Dutch Shephard named Arco officially joined the Karnes County Sheriff’s Office in April after completing comprehensive training.

The training included certification for properly searching individuals and locating narcotics.

In addition, Arco and his handler, Deputy Jonathan Kurtz, jointly attended a 120-hour course for patrol and narcotics detention in Liberty Hill, Texas.

The canine was purchased by Sheriff Dwayne Villanueva using asset forfeiture funds and is actively on duty and serving the residents of his county.

Karnes County is located approximately one hour southeast of San Antonio with a population of about 15,000.
