FAIR OAKS RANCH, Texas - Golfers hit the greens at Fair Oaks Ranch Golf Course Monday to celebrate an important milestone in Texas history: Juneteenth.

June 19, 1866 was when more than 200,000 Texas slaves found out about their freedom.

However, they found out two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed because, as history states, it took that long for the word to reach Texas.

Union Gen. Gordon Grainger rode into Galveston Bay, Texas and read Executive Order #3, proclaiming "all slaves are free" two years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.

While Texas is the only state in which Juneteenth became an official state holiday in 1980, Byron Miller of the Juneteenth Commission said the day is recognized worldwide and respected and celebrated by all races.
