SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio's official Independence Day celebration takes place at Woodlawn Lake Park on the west side.

It's a day of food, fun, fireworks and lots of families.

Staying safe is on the minds of many. With 25,000 people expected to attend, and no avoiding the heat, sunscreen and lots of fluids are your best bet.

There were drink stands and free water bottles available throughout the park for families to enjoy.

Most families told KENS 5 they are sticking around for the fireworks extravaganza at 9 p.m. People are advised to leave pets at home.

Experts say more pets run away on the Fourth of July than any other day of the year. They're usually trying to get away from the loud popping noise of fireworks. As an alternative, people are advised to leave them with soft music playing to block out the sounds outside.

San Antonio police are on patrol throughout the day and night to assist anyone who needs help.
