The first baby born in San Antonio in 2018 was welcomed by his family at Northeast Baptist Hospital at 12:22 a.m.
Sergio Marcel Gomez weighed 7 pounds, 9 ounces. He and his parents will receive gifts donated by hospital systems and other organizations from around San Antonio.
Area hospitals all work together with labor and delivery staff at midnight on New Year's every year to determine exactly which baby was the first to be born in the new year.
Some of the gifts include a $10,000 scholarship from University of the Incarnate Word, an infant car seat and portable playpen from University Health Systems, an infant activity center from CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System and various other donated gift baskets and gift cards.
Planned c-sections and planned inductions did not qualify for the honor.
