Thanksgiving will never be the same for one Atascosa family who lost their 2-year-old boy, Zachariah Rodriguez, in a tragic accident Thursday morning.
The toddler’s father was pulling out of the driveway when he accidentally struck the child. His grandfather, Paul Soto, says it’s still hard to wrap his head around the tragedy.
“It's hard to celebrate Thanksgiving now,” Soto said. “But I know where my grandson is now and I know someday we're all going to go see him again.”
The grandson and grandfather had an unbreakable bond.
“He was always making you smile, he would dress himself, put his clothes on backwards, always playing with my tools,” Soto recalled. “I guess he wanted to be like grandpa.”
But now their bond will only live on Soto's heart.
Baby Zachariah succumbed to severe head trauma at University Hospital, hours after the accident. Soto says that the tragedy should serve as a reminder to parents.
“We need to watch our children, keep an eye on them at all times, especially the little ones,” he said.
The grandfather, in tears, said that he will always remember the little moments and his sweet smile.
“What I’ll miss most are his kisses, his goodnight kisses,” Soto said.
Funeral arrangements for Zachariah are still pending. If you’d like to help the family cover medical and funeral costs, they’ve set up a GoFundMe page here.
