Two people are missing after a barge carrying crude oil caught fire early Friday offshore between Port Aransas and Rockport.

Coast Guard officials responded to the fire, which began about 4:35 a.m.

The barge was headed to a refinery and caught fire about two miles offshore of San Jose Island, said Harbormaster Chuck West, whose based at Conn Brown Harbor in Aransas Pass.

Lt. Jennae Steinmiller said the barge was carrying 140,000 barrels of crude oil. A 1,000 yard safety zone has been placed around the barge to keep out incoming traffic.

Steinmiller said six members of the crew of eight are accounted for at this time.

A helicopter and airplane responded to the incident and no reports of leaks have been made, Steinmiller said.

As of 8 a.m. the fire was still burning.
