Broadway murder victim fondly remembered

Friends call Tania Rendon-Santiago a dedicated psychologist.

The woman who was shot to death last Monday at an upscale apartment on Broadway is being remembered as a well-loved, compassionate doctor of psychology.

When police arrived at 1800 Broadway last week for a call for shots fired, neighbors said they had heard a woman screaming for her life. Witnesses told police they saw 35-year-old Tania Rendon-Santiago on the fourth floor balcony, struggling to keep the sliding glass door to the apartment closed.

Police said 36-year-old Scott Caruso was inside the apartment when he fired a shot through that door, hitting the victim, and then shot her again, killing her.

They said as officers kicked in the door to the apartment, Caruso killed himself. The report indicates officers found the man on the couch with a gunshot wound to the head. A gun was found beside his body.

An online account set up to help the victim's family calls Rendon-Santiago an angel on earth, a generous and compassionate listener, with the heart and charisma of a princess. Friends said she specialized in psychology focused on older adults and multicultural mental health awareness.

Trevino Funeral Home is handling arrangements but they have yet to announce the plans for services.

Friends set up a GoFundMe with the goal of raising $11,000 for the family. They surpassed that goal in less than four days.
