Alex Iyer, an 8th grader from Boerne's Geneva School, made it all the way to the final 10 before he was eliminated on Thursday at the final of the Scripps-Howard National Spelling Bee.

The competition was broadcast on ESPN.

There were eight spellers left when Iyer took to the mic to spell "savate," which is a sport resembling boxing but permitting blows to be delivered with the feet as well as the hands. Iyer quickly answered, but left out the last letter when the bell rung and his night ended.

Congratulations on a great run, Alex.
