A Bexar County Sheriff’s Office deputy was indicted by a grand jury on Thursday after he allegedly physically assaulted an inmate in June of 2016.

Michael Cesar Fernandez is accused of striking inmate Gilbert Ramos in the face on June 15 of 2016 at the Bexar County Adult Detention Center after an altercation, according to the indictment obtained by KENS 5.

As a public servant, Fernandez received charges of official oppression, violation of civil rights of a person in custody, assault causing bodily injury, and tampering with evidence.

The indictment alleges that Fernandez made a ‘false entry’ when reporting the incident, stating he ‘inadvertently struck’ the inmate with his hand.

Fernandez is on administrative leave without pay until the case is closed.
