NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas - The New Braunfels Fire Department announced it will use specialty masks to keep pets safe during a fire.

The masks would reportedly fit a large variety of pets and use the same medical-grade oxygen as ambulances. NBFD said they would aid in ventilating animals affected by fires.

“Pets are family members to citizens in New Braunfels, and this is another way we can assist homeowners during an extreme time of need,” said NBFD battalion chief Darren Brinkkoeter. “All too often, pets run and hide during a house fire. This results in pets being exposed to toxic smoke during different phases of a house fire.”

The New Braunfels Fire Department also reminds residents to evacuate all people from the home in the event of a fire and to never go back inside a fire to retrieve anything.
