Man's best friend is now allowed at The Shops at La Cantera.

"We talked to our retailers and restaurants and surveyed them, and overwhelmingly they decided that they wanted to allow dogs here on the property as well," said Senior General Manager Brian Schroeder.

Schroeder told us some of the rules. He said, "If they are well behaved, they are on a leash, or they are in a pet carrier, they are welcome here on the property."

There are a couple common areas where it is not okay for them to play. Schroeder told us, "Our customers are not allowed to bring their dogs into the children's play area or fountains, but they are able to take their dogs throughout the entire common area and most of our stores and restaurants."

"We love when people bring their dogs in. We kind of forget we are at work for a minute," said Aleah Hui. She works at Lush, which is one of about 75 percent of the stores and patio restaurants that says bringing your furry friend in is fine. She added, "We love having our animal friends. We will bring them water and we will pet them, and I mean, it's such a fun happy place to work. What's better than adding a dog into the mix or many dogs?"

But what happens if you dog has to express themselves while prancing around? "They can go into the landscaping," Schroeder said.

The mall does recommend that you bring your own bags to clean up after your dog, but if you forget, they will have five bag stations available just in case. "We have housekeeping and security that will be monitoring the common areas. We hope it's minimal but we will take care of the messes if they occur," said Schroeder.

They just ask that you take the time to pick up after your pooch so nobody puts their foot in something they're not expecting, and bring your own supply of water. But if if you need refills, Schroeder told us, "We have water fountains in our restaurant complex where they can get water for their dogs.":

The mall will be having a kickoff event to celebrate the new policy on April 7th and 8th. The San Antonio Humane Society and pet vendors will be joining as well.
